American Staffordshire Terrier

The dog is the only living being that has found and recognizes an indubitable, tangible and definite god. He knows to whom above him to give himself.

Descended from bulldogs and terriers bred for dog fighting, the American Staffordshire Terrier was also used in the dog pits. Although he resembles the American Pit Bull Terrier he is a separate and distinct breed who has had all aggressive tendencies bred out of him over the past 50 years. Created in the 1800s in the USA, this dog has been through a number of name changes.

He was once known as the Yankee Terrier, the Half-and-Half, and the American Bull Terrier. Originally recognized as the Staffordshire Terrier, his name was changed to American Staffordshire Terrier to avoid confusion with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The "Am Staff" is now an affectionate and loving family pet. Remember Pete the pup from the TV comedy "Our Gang"? He was an Am Staff.

Compact and powerfully built, the Am Staff stands up to 19 inches at the shoulder and weighs up to 65 pounds. He has a short, smooth, coat that comes in any color or combination of colors. Grooming needs are minimal. He cannot be exposed to extremes in temperature for extended periods of time.

The American Staffordshire Terrier is a fearless and courageous dog. Despite his roots, today the Am Staff is patient, reliable, loving, and extremely devoted to his family. Known for being good with children, the Am Staff is gentle and good natured enough to accept their sometimes rough play. A loyal companion, the Am Staff tolerates other household pets well. This is a very versatile breed with an eager to please personality. Am Staffs excel at weight pulling, tracking, agility, flyball, and as therapy dogs to children, the elderly and the infirm. They are also used as farm dogs and many work on TV commericals.

Intelligent, and strong-willed, he benefits from early obedience training and socialization. Training can be a challenge for the inexperienced dog owner. His terrier nature requires an owner who is strong and confident without being overbearing. The Am Staff has a high activity level and needs daily exercise. He can live well in either the city or country but must have a fenced backyard.
