The State dog of Wisconsin, the American Water
Spaniel (AWS) is one of the few "Made in the USA" breeds of dog. He was originally
developed in the 1800s in the Midwest to spring and retrieve waterfowl from canoes. However,
he's an excellent hunter who will also hunt rabbit, grouse, quail, and pheasant.

Also known as the "Brown Spaniel" the
AWS stands up to 18 inches tall at the
shoulder. and weighs in at a maximum of 45 pounds. His coat is short, tightly curled, and
water-resistant, providing protection against very cold water. It may be liver, brown, or dark
chocolate in color. As an athletic sporting dog, American Water Spaniel needs regular exercise
but his size makes him a good fit for smaller homes.
The
American Water Spaniel does best when he is kept as an active part of the family unit. Loyal,
protective, and devoted, he tends to bond strongly with one particular person and one family
and does not take to changes in ownership well. The AWS needs to understand his place in the
pack. His owner must be a firm, consistent leader who can deal with a strong, dominant dog.
Intelligent and determined, the AWS is fully capable of making his own decisions and trying to
assume leadership of the group if his owner doesn't take the job!
Training and socialization should begin early. The AWS is a
quick learner but will become bored with too much repetition. A training program with plenty
of variety will be most effective. Patience is the key as these dogs mature somewhat more
slowly than other sporting breeds.
