As his name suggests, the Australian Terrier
was created in Australia by mixing several terrier breeds including the Dandie
Dinmont,
Yorkshire, Skye, and old Black and Tan. Bred to be a watchdog and keep down the population of
rodents and snakes, the Australian Terrier was the first Australian breed to be recognized and
shown in his homeland.

The Australian Terrier is the smallest of the
working terriers. He stands up to 10 inches tall at the shoulder. His double coat is short and
coarse, and comes in sandy, red, or blue with tan markings. His coat is a 'natural' one and
this makes the Australian Terrier a low maintenance dog.
With a
friendly disposition and affectionate nature, the Australian Terrier makes a loyal companion
for a family. He possesses the confidence, courage, and intelligence typical of terriers.
Fun-loving Aussies are known for their devotion to their families. They are great with
children and do well with the elderly or handicapped owners. Feisty and entertaining, they
easily endear themselves to those they meet.
Small but mighty, this is a tough little dog who makes an
excellent watchdog. He is lively and spirited enough to enjoy a good playtime yet his small
size means that exercise needs are easily satisfied. Aussies fit well into most accommodation
and can adapt easily to city or country life. They are easily trained into well-mannered
companions.
