Border Terrier
"Chance" and "Ewok"

Once known as the Coquetdale Terrier, Border Terriers were developed in the counties along the border of northern England and southern Scotland as fox hunters. They hunted with packs of foxhounds to protect farmers' livestock.

Border Terriers were bred to flush or draw their prey out after it had 'gone to ground' and was out of reach of larger hounds. Their smaller size allows them to follow quarry into burrows and culverts.

Excellent hunters, today's Border Terriers still work in hound packs and retrieve game. They also do very well in obedience, den trials, terrier races, flyball, and agility, and have been used as therapy dogs in seniors' homes.

Border Terriers weigh up to 15 1/2 pounds, and have short, dense, wiry coats in shades of red, grizzle, tan, blue and tan, or wheaten. Their coats do require some grooming to keep the dog looking tidy and matt-free. They should be regularly brushed and stripped but not clipped.

Perhaps it is the Border Terrier's distinctive face, said to resemble an otter, which has endeared him to so many. This breed is said to have been the favorite of James Herriot, the British Veterinarian who wrote "All Creatures Great and Small".

Like most terriers, the Border Terrier has been described as a "big dog personality in a small dog body"! An excellent family pet, the Border Terrier enjoys swimming and gets along well with other dogs. Bright, perky, active, and affectionate, this breed is a naturally curious and effective watch dog. Border Terriers will investigate any sound and will chase anything that moves!

A true terrier, the Border Terrier needs firm, consistent leadership from his owner, and will benefit from early obedience training and socialization. This dog is extremely active and agile, and has a high energy level. He needs lots of exercise and should have a long daily walk.
