Developed in
the
British Isles by crossing the Old English Bulldog and a terrier, the Staffordshire Bull
Terrier was originally bred for bull-baiting and dog fighting. When blood sports were
outlawed in England, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier became a family pet and watchdog.

Standing 14 to
16 inches at the shoulder, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a short, dense, and smooth coat
that comes in red, fawn, white, black, or blue. Any one of these colors with white is also
common.
The
Staffordshire Bull Terrier is very strong for his size. He is muscular, active, and agile.
This breed is very attached to his people and is so very fond of small children that he has been called the
"Nanny dog".
However, he is a strong-willed animal and can be stubborn.
He needs firm handling and constant training as some of these dogs still retain a strong
instinct to fight with other dogs. He should be socialized to other animals,
particularly other dogs, from a very young age. Fortunately he is also a quick learner. This
breed has a high energy level and requires a good daily run.
