Welsh Springer Spaniel

Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current  events.
The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of
late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are
often continued in the next yard.

Spaniels are divided into two groups, land spaniels and water spaniels. Welsh Springer Spaniels are land spaniels and are named for their expertise at flushing out or springing at game to make it run or fly away. Arriving in Wales with the Gauls centuries ago, these red and white dogs remained relatively isolated in Wales until the late 1800s. They were once known as Welsh Cockers.

The Welsh Springer stands 19 inches at the shoulder and has a moderately long, straight, weather-resistant coat. There is feathering on the legs, ears, chest, and underside of the body. The red and white coat is self-cleaning.

Like most sporting dogs, the Welsh Springer Spaniel is best suited to an active home where he will be a cherished member of the family. Friendly, loyal, energetic, and devoted to his people, the Welsh Springer is a super companion who gets along well with children and other pets. He is not a dog who should be left alone for long periods. Although he makes a good watchdog, he is much too fond of people to make an effective guard dog.

A hard worker who can happily spend all day in the field, the Welsh Springer Spaniel  has a high energy level and requires lots of exercise.   The Welsh Springer should live in a home with a fenced backyard where he has room to run off-leash. He needs an active owner who will give him an outlet for his energy!
